SALEM — The eighth graders at Franklin Park Middle School in Salem got a bit of a year-end treat on Monday, as they gathered to watch the school’s principal, assistant principal and school resource officer take buckets of slime over their heads.
Six lucky students even got the chance to be the ones to dump the slime buckets over the staff members, with the event offered as a reward for the fundraising prowess of the eighth grade class during the school’s annual canned food drive earlier this year.
Franklin Park Principal Tyer Lux was once again happy to volunteer for the sliming, as he has done for the past several years, with the eighth graders making a habit of topping the school’s overall fundraising goal on their own during each year’s food drive.
“This year, we set a goal of $4,000 as a school and eighth grade, themselves, brought in $4,185 during the food drive,” Lux said. “So this event is their reward.”
Lux noted that the eighth grader science class actually make the slime each year, with eighth grade teacher Nicole Rexilius explaining the ingredients in the mixture.
“I had to buy 30 big boxes of jello and 30 pounds of flour, and then there is water in there, and baby soap,” said Rexilius.
She noted that the students were excited to finally get to the sliming day on Monday.
“They were super excited,” said Rexilius, noting that the students chosen to do the actual sliming were the ones who spearheaded the fundraising efforts during the canned food drive.
She singled out eighth grader Adelynn Bumgarner, in particular, as the main driving force during the fundraising campaign.
In addition to Bumgarner, other students selected to dump the slime buckets included Jocelyn Sanderson, Zyan Petrea, Berrick Sweet, Aaron Ary and Marisa Reyes-Tiburcio.
Rexilius noted that with the 2023-2024 school year finishing up this week, the slime event on Monday was a fun way for the eighth grade class to finish up their middle school careers, with graduation held on Tuesday evening.
