MOUNT VERNON — The Jefferson County Historical Society will once again host its Afternoon Tea program, from 2 to 4 p.m. on July 27, in the Schweinfurth Museum at the Jefferson County Historical Village.
The fundraising program is returning after a long hiatus. This will be the first time that the Historical Society has held an Afternoon Tea since 2020, when JCHS activities were disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Due to the pandemic, we stopped many of our indoor activities, but we have been adding them back as we have been able,” said Dana Uhls, JCHS public information specialist. “This is going to be a relaxing and enjoyable event, and we look forward to welcoming our guests.”
The event offers people a chance to relax and enjoy a “classic teatime,” organizers say. Those who attend can come in groups or as individuals. The largest available table accommodations are for eight people.
In addition to a selection of teas and coffee, the July 27 Afternoon Tea will feature a variety of finger sandwiches, as well as sweets and scones served with jams and cream, states a JCHS news release. The tea will be served in an assortment of antique cups and saucers.
“We hope that it will be an elegant experience for them,” said Schweinfurth Museum Curator Lucy Baker. “We’re trying to make excellent food, (and have as) great (of) decorations as we can within the historical atmosphere of the museum. It’ll be a small group of people, because of the lack of space (that) we have. So it is important that they get in reservations early to make sure (that) we can have room for them.”
The price to attend the event is $20 per person for non-members and $15 per person for Jefferson County Historical Society members. Seating is limited, and reservations are required and must be made by Tuesday, July 23.
All proceeds from the Afternoon Tea will go toward the operation of the Jefferson County Historical Village at 1411 N. 27th St. in Mount Vernon.
To pre-register and make a reservation for the event, call the local Historical Society office at (618) 246-0033. The office is open from noon to 4 p.m. on weekdays.
