MOUNT VERNON — The Lady Rams track and field team won its own invitational Wednesday.
Mount Vernon finished the seven-team meet with 148 points. Other team scores were: Pinckneyville 102, Carterville 98, Centralia 91, Salem 70, Nashville 26 and Webber 13.
“We had some really, really good performances that are going to move us up in our sectional standings,” Mount Vernon coach Dan Mings said. “The girls really performed well today. Some girls did some different events today and rose up. It was pretty impressive.”
Kamaree Pollard won four events to lead the Lady Rams. The senior claimed victory in the 100 meters (12.36 seconds), 200 meters (26.34 seconds), 400 meters (58.74 seconds) and the triple jump (35 feet, 4 inches). Pollard’s time in the 400 meters was two tenths of a second off the school record.
“She already holds the 100 and the 200 record so hopefully someday she’ll get another chance to run in warm temperature and maybe get that record to herself as well,” Mings said.
Melaina Zedalis in the long jump (16 feet, 2.25 inches), Dezaire Jones in the high jump (5 feet, 3.75 inches), the 400 meter relay team (51.55 seconds), 800 meter relay team (1:49.99) and the 1,600 meter relay team (4:23.64) all finished first for the victorious Lady Rams.
Nashville and Salem also scored first-place finishes. Salem’s Hannah Smith won the discus (107 feet, 6 inches) while her teammate Carly Veach won the 100 meter hurdles (16.55 seconds). Nashville’s Levi Welte was a winner in the pole vault (8 feet, 6 inches).
Teams competed in pleasant conditions after a chilly, rainy start to the season.
“Up to this point, today was the best day of the year weather-wise, temperature-wise, lack of wind,” Mings said. “It was just a really good day to compete in track. We felt good about it.”
Centralia tallied several second-place finishes. They were: Sha’Mary Maines-May in the 200 meters (27.49 seconds); Mya McGee in the discus (93 feet) and the 400 meter relay team (51.82 seconds).
Jones ended second in the triple jump for Mount Vernon with a leap of 32 feet, 9 inches. Other second-place finishers for Mount Vernon were: Zaria Strowder in the 100 meters (12.97 seconds); Lilly Houle in the 800 meters (2:38.91) and Kennedy Bax in the 1,600 meters (5:35.86).
