Salem Elks Lodge #1678 recently presented a check to the Hungry Hearts summer meals program to assist the program with the cost of operating this summer.
The funds were secured through the Elks’ grant programs, according to Salem Elks member Mike Hooe.
“The money for Hungry Hearts came from the Beacon grant,” said Hooe.”And we combined that this year with the Spotlight Grant, which increased its value up to $6,000.”
He noted that with the Hungry Hearts program this year facing some funding difficulties in their effort to feed Salem area youths during the summer months, the Elks wanted to reach out and do whatever they could to help out.
“We dearly love the Hungry Hearts program … our lodge was the primary sponsor of that program for six straight years,” said Hooe. “So, we are just thrilled that we were able to help them out this year.”
Hungry Hearts Director Marilyn Lewis expressed her gratitude for the support from the Elks this year, as the grants assisted with a funding shortfall over the summer.
Lewis added that the program saw growth in its numbers this year, as more local kids were taking advantage of the free meals that were handed out each weekday from the end of the school year in May until the start of the new school year in August.
In addition to the funding assistance from the Elks, Lewis also thanked the community members and groups that came out throughout the summer to help make the meals each week and deliver them to several pickup sites across Salem.
