OPEN HOUSE — The Housing Authority of the City of Mount Vernon and College Oaks will host a special open house from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 29, at the newly remodeled College Oaks homes at 1105 Prairie Ave.
MOUNT VERNON — The Housing Authority of the City of Mount Vernon and College Oaks will host a special open house from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 29, at the newly remodeled College Oaks homes at 1105 Prairie Ave.
The event will give the public a chance to see the upgrades that are being made to the College Oaks site. These homes were built in 2001, and have been getting a “fresh look” with new roofs, updated flooring, cabinets, countertops, vanities and appliances as units turn over, said Housing Authority Executive Director Sierra Daniels.
“The Housing Authority of Mount Vernon is committed to preserving and improving our College Oaks homes so (that) they continue serving families well into the future,” Daniels said. “This open house is a chance for the community to see the upgrades we have made, from new roofs to modern interiors, and to learn more about how these homes provide safe, quality and affordable housing in Mount Vernon.”
Also at the Sept. 29 open house, visitors can enjoy prize drawings and learn more about College Oaks, which provides affordable housing through the Low-Income Housing Tax Credit program. The event is free and open to the community.
Currently, the city’s Housing Authority manages 112 units at Rose Lane, which are primarily apartments for the elderly and disabled. The authority also has about 50 single family homes that are located throughout the Southtown area, that were developed using tax credits. In addition, they administer the Housing Choice Voucher Program, formerly known as Section 8, and about 68 vouchers are held currently, Sentinel archives state.
