MT. VERNON — Salem knocked off the Lady Rams in a Monday night volleyball matchup.
The Lady Wildcats won the match 25-14, 25-20. Jordan Kessler led Salem with six kills. Four different players ended with a pair of kills each for the Lady Rams. The group consisted of Kendall Mast, Addison McMillian, Lyric Henninger and Aryana Benson.
“They had a lot of really great hustle plays tonight, going after the ball, not letting it drop, especially the first set,” Salem coach Nicki Brubaker said. “There were a lot of things that happened that they really went after. Our serving was pretty good. Once again something we have to work on that’s continuous this year is coming out the second set, not getting behind or coming out flat.”
Salem spread its offense around in the opening game and showed strong defense, defending against the Lady Rams attack. Seven different players registered a kill for the Lady Wildcats in the first game.
“We really don’t have one hitter that carries the team,” Brubaker said. “We do a good job of mixing it up. We have several hitters on the team that can put the ball down. Tonight everybody was pretty much on.”
The Lady Wildcats doubled up Mt. Vernon 10-5 after Quinn Wolfe served up an ace. The lead ballooned to 15-5 with Wolfe still serving. The sophomore dialed up back-to-back aces, and the run ended with a pair of Mt. Vernon errors. The double digit deficit led to a Lady Rams timeout.
The two teams traded points for the remainder of the game. Paelynn Harris ended the game with a kill for Salem.
Mt. Vernon grabbed an early lead in the final game. The Lady Rams ripped off four straight points behind the serving of Mast. The sophomore served up a pair of aces to help the Lady Rams start strong.
Salem responded with a run and took an 8-5 lead. Wolfe knocked down back-to-back kills for Salem. The game was tied 10-10 after Jerica Newell put down a kill past the Salem block.
The game stayed close until Salem opened up a lead late in the game. Harris converted a kill to give the Lady Wildcats a 20-16 lead. A pair of aces from Kessler pushed the lead to a half dozen.
Brianna Redenbo ended the match with a kill.
“We have the drive to win. These girls all really want to win,” Brubaker said. “And believe that or not that doesn’t happen every year, the teams that really have that drive that I want to win this game.”
Salem improved to 12-6 this season while Mt. Vernon dropped to 5-10.
