CARLYLE — While Carlyle Lake has entered the fall season, the call has gone out for volunteers on Saturday, Sept. 27, for Shoreline Clean-Up Day. Shoreline Clean-Up Day is also on the same day as National Public Lands Day.
Volunteers will join park rangers at the Carlyle Lake West Spillway Recreation Area to partake in a shoreline clean-up project for National Public Lands Day. Volunteers are asked to arrive at 8 a.m. All volunteers must wear closed-toe shoes, bring gloves and water bottles.
With lake levels receding, volunteers and rangers can pick up debris and litter left over on the shore.
NATIONAL PUBLIC LANDS DAY HISTORY
Last year, over 130 national parks hosted events, with 7,600 volunteers donating an impressive 41,500 hours of service.
National Public Lands Day is organized annually and led by the National Environmental Education Foundation, in partnership with the National Park Service and other federal agencies. Hundreds of thousands of volunteers roll up their sleeves to help restore and preserve public lands of all types and sizes — from iconic national parks and rivers to local urban green spaces and everything in between. National Public Lands Day is special, because it provides all lovers of the environment — old and new — an opportunity to show our appreciation for these unique places.
It’s also a “Fee-Free Day,” when entrance fees are waived at national parks and many other public lands across the country.
What are public lands, you might ask? Public lands include national parks, forests, monuments, wildlife refuges, grasslands, marine sanctuaries, lakes and state, county and city parks.
