MOUNT VERNON — The 34th Annual Mount Vernon FFA Scholarship BBQ will be held from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. Friday before the Homecoming football game.
This will be drive-thru only and meals may be picked up in front of the Mount Vernon Township High School cafeteria.
The menu consists of BBQ pork sandwich, baked potato, corn, baked beans, dessert and drink. BBQ day tickets are $14.
All proceeds benefit the Mount Vernon FFA Alumni Scholarship Fund, which offers scholarship opportunities to MVTHS FFA graduating seniors and to FFA members to help cover the cost of a trip or conference.
“We appreciate the support of the community,” said John Kabat, MVTHS agriculture teacher and co-FFA advisor.
To say the least, the BBQ has grown over the last 34 years and has become a community tradition.
The first BBQ yielded one $300 scholarship. Today, plans call for the BBQ to fund 10- to-15 scholarships ranging from $500- to-$1,500.
“We hope to make $10,000- to-$12,000 in scholarships to our seniors next spring and this is our major fundraiser,” Kabat said.
Businesses or individuals wanting to submit a large order may call (618) 231-5699 by noon Thursday to schedule a pickup time.
“The Mt. Vernon FFA Scholarship BBQ is a cherished tradition that has been bringing the community together for 34 years. This annual event not only celebrates the spirit and values of the FFA but also plays a vital role in supporting future leaders. It’s more than just a meal — it’s an investment in the next generation of FFA members,” according to a Mount Vernon FFA statement.
