MOUNT VERNON — What is the connection between a pea and a royal couple’s search for a wife for their son?
That is just one of the questions to be explored when “The Princess and The Pea,” this year’s Theater for Kids production, is presented at Mount Vernon Township High School’s Schweinfurth Theater.
King Pendleton and Queen Pandora are in search of the perfect match for their son Prince Pete. With the help of wisecracking Granny Primrose, uptight Lord Pendragon, and sweet Lady Jean, the kingdom has summoned a plethora of princesses to compete for their son’s affection.
Add a stack of mattresses, switched identities, and a mysterious late night visitor, and you end up with the wackiest (and probably first) fairy tale dating game. The princesses may be fierce competitors, but who will win the prince’s heart?
One of the objectives of Theater for Kids is to give youngsters exposure to live theater. Area kindergarten- to-fourth-grade students will come to MVTHS during the school day on Thursday and Friday to view the play free of charge. These performances are closed to the public. “The Princess and The Pea” will be presented at 7 p.m. Thursday and Friday with performances open to the public. Tickets are $5 each with no charge for youngsters fourth-grade and under.

“The joy and adventure of a live performance cannot be topped. Most children in our area only ever see a live show at MVTHS, so this is a way to expand their horizons,” according to Raquel Bliffen, MVTHS drama director.
