Yes, Halloween has “Caught My Eye” for a long time. I can still recall specific instances from my childhood and the annual October event – anticipation, participation and reflection for sure. It was fun to walk around in the old neighborhood – up the alley and down Westwood Drive and then up RR #2 and over to Crown View, now dark and of course stuff the old paper grocery bag with surprises! A few families made caramel covered apples which were always a real treat. It was kinda sad when I “got too old”.
But, when I moved to Bonnie all those years ago I felt like I was returning to my childhood with a twist. Now I was on the other side, always handing out full size candy bars, “real” candy bars as I became known for. Also of fun was my beagle Pinky and her ability to repulse TPers, many students who had come to see if they could pull it off. Some did and many were sent packing. Actually the “rule” was when you were caught you stop and come in for your candy bar. That did not exactly deter attempts. In fact as fall approached she would stand in the back yard, throw her nose to the breeze and anticipate! Even when she got too old she would lay down in the grass so the kids could pet her as they made the circuit. One night as they cut over from the other block they stirred up a rabbit which came around the corner and ran right over her. She woke up, looked around and gave the look, “must have been a dream?”Then there was Buddy. The first Halloween after we got Buddy, the not so social Dachshund, I cracked the door for the first group and he snuck out the door and chased those goblin’s Basset Hound all the way back to its trailer. He spent subsequent Halloweens in the back bedroom. The current hound Cocoa is good natured and she took well to “Buzz Lightyear”, “Woody”, an “Imperial Storm Trooper” from Star Wars and a few characters I was too old to recognize 🙂
Years ago things kinda fell off around here. I retired and some years we only had 8 trick or treaters. Gone was the bonfire at the park and the hayride. I have to credit Jimmy Strain who was heavily involved in the efforts back then. But, a few years ago, things were born anew. Although the work of many, I think the new village Secretary/Treasurer Natalie Colp has lots to do with that. Brenda and I walked over for a chili dog around the campfire and some treats. We got home in time for around 40 trick or treaters. It was a fun time and I can hardly imagine the work some did to pull it off. Although a slight sprinkle cancelled the hay ride, it was still lots of good old “Community Fun”! The sprinkles were nothing compared to the year we were getting ice pellets. We are already looking forward to next year.
Some “THANKS!” are in order. Let us begin with Natalie and the Village Board – also, Ryan Hays, Wes Meyer (Mayor) and Steven Hays who worked hard to get the concession building at the park back in order. It had become a little aged but now is in good shape. Job well done! Also thanks to Natalie and Ryan for the set-up and take-down. How about the sponsors: Bonnie Café, Lang Furniture, J&J Services and the Little House in the Village AirBnB.
Many set up shop at the “trunk or treat” at the park: Robert & Vera Lowery, Steve & Angela Fulkerson, Robert & Natalie Colp, Bailey McGrady & Donyale Black, First Baptist Church of Bonnie, Bonnie Church of God, South Hickory Hill Christian Church, Justin & Tracy Fulkerson and Christina & Olivia Johnson. A few still used the door to door angle and you could get on a list & directions for that: Jedd & Heather Holloman, Vicki Hubbard, Bonnie Café and Bob & Brenda Frakes. There were also tables to be worked at the Pavilion and Jamie & Terri Vanderstelt and Glenda Haynes & Martha Veteto took care of that. Robert & Vera are pictured in the photo checking out the chow line.
Again, compliments to all. They just oiled the streets here and the park is looking good. Keep up the good work!
