The Salem Rotary Club made a recent donation to the Salem DOEM. From left are: Rotarian Brenda Jones, Rotarian and Salem Department of Emergency Management Assistant Director Shane Mansker, Salem Department of Emergency Management Director Andrew Strong, Salem Rotary Club President Greg Jones, and Rotarian David Blair.
Representatives of the Rotary Club of Salem recently presented a check in the amount of $3,000 to the Salem Department of Emergency Management (DOEM).
The funds were made available through the Rotary International District 6510’s district grant program with one third coming from the Salem Rotary Club and two thirds coming from The Rotary Foundation.
A portion of the grant is going toward the annual contract for the DOEM’s HAAS Alert system’s five-year contract, through 2029, and the remainder will go toward the future purchase of a thermal imaging drone for the department. The DOEM has also received grants and other support from several area businesses and agencies for which they are grateful.
The HAAS Digital Alert system is an electronic notification sent directly to a driver through their cell phone navigation app (such as WAZE and AppleMaps) or vehicle infotainment system. Those systems must be “on” in order to receive the alerts.
HAAS provides digital alerts directly through their Safety Cloud platform, letting drivers know of emergency vehicles, work zones, and other hazards nearby so they can slow down and move over, as required by law. When emergency or flashing lights in DOEM vehicles are activated en route to an incident, Safety Cloud begins notifying drivers. Drivers are also notified about stationary DOEM vehicles at incident locations.
Certain 2018 and newer Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, and RAM vehicles and certain 2024 and newer Volkswagen vehicles are equipped to receive Safety Cloud alerts through their in-vehicle alert systems. HAAS Alerts is actively working to expand the system to additional apps and vehicles.
The HAAS HA-7 transponder can be installed on any fleet, vehicle, or equipment. Currently, the DOEM has two vehicles with transponders.
Anyone wishing to make donations to the Salem Department of Emergency Management, in support of their technology safety efforts, can make checks payable to the City of Salem with Emergency Management Donation in the memo line. Checks can be mailed to: Salem City Hall or to the DOEM, 201 S. Rotan St., Salem, IL 62881.
The Salem Rotary Club meets on Wednesdays at noon at Bonnie Cafe. Everyone is welcome.
