BLUFORD — Webber’s defense clamped down on Eldorado in a 71-46 Tuesday night victory.
The Trojans generated 10 fourth-quarter turnovers and ripped open a close game. Webber outscored the Eagles 24-7 in the last quarter.
“We knew coming in bigger school they were going to be physical, and I thought our guys did a good job answering that call for a good part of the game,” Webber coach Jaxon Helm said. “The second half I thought our guys came out ready to play and ready to win and made a big difference.”
Nathaniel Marlow led the Trojans with 25 points and nine rebounds. Waylon Jones added 24 points. Jacob Marlow finished with a double double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
Jordan Jones led Eldorado with 11 points. Bronson Tippett chipped in nine.
The Trojans took a 47-39 lead into the last quarter. Webber started the period with a 12-0 run. The Trojans turned the Eagles over several times during the stretch. The mistakes led to easy Webber buckets on the other end.
Jones sandwiched a pair of buckets around a Nathaniel Marlow make to start the frame. Jones then stole the ball and dished off an assist to Marlow. The bucket pushed the lead to 55-39. Bryden Dalby and Jones finished off the run with back-to-back buckets. That gave the Trojans a 59-39 lead.
“Whenever we can get people to turn the ball over and get out in transition, that’s when we’re at our best,” Helm said. “Our halfcourt offense needs a lot of work right now, but luckily we have the transition game to rely on.”
Eldorado chipped the deficit down to 15 points but never got closer.
Webber started the game with a 9-2 run three minutes into the game. Eldorado rallied and evened the game 9-9 midway through the period. Webber closed out the period with a Jones bucket and took a 15-12 lead into the second quarter.
The Trojans opened up a slender margin in the second. Midway through the quarter, Jacob Marlow put the Trojans up 27-19. Jones scored in the final seconds of the half to give the Trojans a 35-30 lead at the break.
“(Jones) has been incredible,” Helm said. “He works on his game a ton. He’s improved a ton, just the confidence whenever he plays you can really tell. I thought that showed tonight. He earns the shots that he gets to take, and he’s doing a good job of converting them into points.”
The two teams traded buckets in the third quarter before Webber took an eight-point edge into the last period.
Webber improved to 5-1 this season.
