INA — The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office has launched a death investigation after a deceased man was found inside a vehicle late last week at an Ina truck stop.
According to a sheriff’s office news release, the JCSO responded at 5:19 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 2, to a report of an unresponsive man in a vehicle at the Speedway Truck Stop, 201 W. North Ave. in Ina. Deputies arrived on scene and located 34-year-old John D. Nickerson of Williston, North Dakota, inside a 1996 GMC Suburban parked at the business.
EMS personnel were already on scene and advised that the man was deceased. Sheriff’s Office Detectives, Coroner Roger Hayse, and Crime Scene Technicians from the Illinois State Police were notified and responded to the scene.
Coroner Hayse declared Nickerson deceased at the scene. The investigation is ongoing with an autopsy to be performed, the news release states.
It is unclear exactly how long the vehicle containing Nickerson was parked at the truck stop before being discovered. No foul play is suspected in the case at this time.
“Truck stops involve numerous travelers, car poolers, etc.,” said Jefferson County Sheriff Jeff Bullard Monday. “It is not unusual for a vehicle to be parked on the property for an extended period of time. There were no reports about the vehicle prior to this one. The person who discovered Mr. Nickerson inside the vehicle deceased had to use a flashlight to be able to see inside the vehicle.”
Any information regarding this investigation can be directed to Detective Captain Jeremy Wilton at (618) 244-8004. Tips can also be given through Crimestoppers at (618) 242-8477 (TIPS), or with the “Submit a Tip” option of the Sheriff’s App.
The Sentinel will continue to follow this story as more information becomes available.
