WOODLAWN — The Lady Cardinals won their seventh straight Midland Trail Conference tournament title in style Thursday against Red Hill.
“The win tonight I thought our intensity out of the gate was good,” Woodlawn coach Matt Patterson said. “Defensively, that’s about as good as we’ve been in a while, the first quarter. It set the tone for us, and when we can run and rebound we shoot the ball a whole lot better. It worked out good.”
Woodlawn held the Salukis scoreless for the opening six minutes of action. During that time, Woodlawn rolled up a 16-0 lead and went on to win 61-24.. Rylie Hockett poured in 11 points in the first quarter. The sophomore finished with 18 points and MVP honors. Hockett missed several games with a collarbone injury.
“Obviousy it’s a huge shot in the arm to get her back,” Patterson said. “Not only does she score, but she makes life easier on a lot of other people.”
McKayla Owens finished with a double double of 16 points and 12 rebounds for Woodlawn. Andrea Kibler added four points and seven rebounds. Both players were named to the all-tournament team.
Red Hill’s offense struggled to find a rhythm against the Woodlawn defense throughout the game. The Salukis were 1 of 12 in the opening half and finished 7 of 31 from the field.
“It was our energy and effort,” Patterson said. “We struggled over the holiday with some effort issues, being on break. But all five tonight just got after it and set the tone. When the subs came in they played hard.defensively.”
The Lady Cardinals built a 38-9 lead going into halftime. The margin was 57-14 going into the fourth, and the game finished with a running clock.
Woodlawn improved to 13-5 this season.
