Led by Pastor RC Merten the Odin and Shattuc United Methodist Churches offer a traditional worship service each Sunday morning. Odin gathers at 8:30 a.m. and Shattuc at 9:45 a.m. Services are streamed live on the churches’ Facebook page. Merten’s message is titled “Come and See,” based on Scripture from John 1:26-42a.
“Come and see” is an effective invitation, and it is one that we need to be using in the life of the church. The best way to do this is to practice Christian hospitality – radical hospitality – welcome people with love and grace, just as Jesus did. We live in a world that is as multicultural as the Galilee of the Gentiles, and our challenge is to create places in which people can come and see Jesus. Everything we do should help people to see him as clearly as the two disciples of John did by the Jordan River, and as Philip and Nathanael did on the road to Galilee, shared Pastor Merten.
We don’t need more arguments about religion and politics. Instead, we need to create places in which people can have personal encounters with Jesus. Lives will be changed if we show people where Jesus is staying and encourage them to remain with him.
The First Reading is Psalms 40:1-8. Hymns including “We Gather Together,” “Christ for the World We Sing” and “Marching to Zion” are accompanied by pianist Clicker Merten at Odin and organist Sherri Jett at Shattuc.
