CENTRALIA — A 20‑year‑old Centralia woman was taken into police custody last week after allegedly battering a 29‑year‑old man and being found in possession of multiple age‑restricted substances.
Kjay Bumgarner was arrested on February 11 at approximately 10:25 p.m. in the 1000 block of West Broadway Street, just minutes after officers took a report from a 29‑year‑old man in the 300 block of West McCord Street. The man told police that Bumgarner had battered him the night before.
According to the victim’s report, the incident occurred around 11 p.m. at the intersection of Chestnut and Broadway. He stated that he was punched in the face, choked to the point his airway was cut off, and spat on. Officers noted visible marks on the side of his face and neck. While one officer documented the complaint, another located Bumgarner and took her into custody.
During the arrest, Bumgarner was allegedly found in possession of alcohol, cannabis, and tobacco products — items she is not legally old enough to possess.
Police initially charged Bumgarner with battery and possession of age‑restricted items. However, the Marion County Court formally charged her with a Class 2 felony count of aggravated domestic battery involving strangulation, three misdemeanor counts of domestic battery, and two counts of violating pre‑trial release.
Court records show that Bumgarner had previously been charged on January 6 with domestic violence and aggravated battery in a public place and was granted pre‑trial release. Following her second domestic battery arrest last week, the court determined she poses a real and present threat to the safety of the victim due to repeated incidents and continued contact.
Bumgarner is currently being held in the Marion County Jail and is scheduled to appear before Judge Sanders for a preliminary hearing on March 10.
