Led by Pastor RC Merten the Odin and Shattuc United Methodist Churches offer a traditional worship service each Sunday morning. Odin gathers at 8:30 a.m. and Shattuc at 9:45 a.m. Services are streamed live on the churches’ Facebook page. Merten’s message is titled “What Will He See?” based on Scripture from 1 Samuel 16:1-13.
Then the Lord says, “How long will you grieve over Saul? I have rejected him from being king over Israel. Fill your horn with oil and set out; I will send you to Jesse the Bethlehemite, for I have provided for myself a king among his sons.”
After Eliab, Jesse calls his son Abinadab. “Nope,” says the prophet. Then Jesse summons Shammah. “Nope.” Jesse makes seven of his sons pass before the prophet, and Samuel says, “The LORD has not chosen any of these.” But Samuel is not finished, shared Pastor Merten. He says to Jesse, “Are all your sons here?” Jesse answers, “There remains yet the youngest, but he is keeping the sheep.” And Samuel says to Jesse, “Bring him.”
So, David, the shepherd boy, is brought to Samuel. The Lord says to Samuel, “Rise and anoint him, for this is the one.” God looks on David’s heart and makes his selection. This selection process is still going on today. God is not looking at outer appearances. He is looking at our hearts. What will he see?
