FEE CHANGES — The Rend Lake College Board of Trustees Tuesday approved some changes to the college’s fee system. These changes will go into effect for the Spring Term 2026.
INA — The Rend Lake College Board of Trustees Tuesday, Sept. 9 approved some changes to the college’s fee system that will go into effect for the Spring Term 2026.
RLC no longer uses physical ID cards. They are now digital, so the replacement ID card fee of $10 was removed from the system, said Henry “Buster” Leeck, vice president – academic & student services for RLC.
Also, there were changes made to three course fees. One course fee, for Art 1101 Art Appreciation, was decreased to 0. At the same time, two others – CSCI 1104 Introduction to Programming and PHLE 1200 Introduction to Phlebotomy, were increased, officials said. The fees were updated to better reflect the needs of the college, states an RLC news release.
“We adjust course fees twice per year to reflect the cost of the materials (that) we utilize in the courses,” Leeck said. “Including these fees up front prevents students from having a surprise additional cost later and having to procure commonly used supplies for their classes on their own. Federal pell grants and scholarships can be applied to course fees as well if they are included when a student registers.”
Also on Tuesday, the board granted permission to bid and award a Student Center efficiency project. This project will enhance energy efficiency, reduce maintenance costs and improve comfort and safety for students, the news release states. The college will use IGEN funding for the project. This funding maximizes available grant resources and supports sustainability goals, the release states.
“We have been awarded $199,951 from IGEN and will cover the remainder of project costs with institutional funds,” the release states.
Lynne French, assistant director-facilities management and campus operations for RLC, gave some details on the project itself.
“The project will include the demolition of the existing 2,490-square-foot single pane window system on the north side of the Student Center and replacing it with a 985-square-foot double pane window insulated curtain wall,” French said. “In addition, new energy-efficient double doors will be installed. Reducing the size of the windows will improve building performance and significantly lower the heat load, contributing to long-term energy savings and sustainability.”
French added, “This project reflects our commitment to improving facilities, reducing operational costs and creating a more efficient and comfortable environment for students and the campus community.”
Other RLC Board actions Tuesday included:
- The board approved various revisions to RLC policy and procedure.
- The board appointed James Bailey as maintenance technician, pending a successful background check, effective Sept. 22.
- The board approved ratification of the payment of college expenses, including travel expense reimbursements.
