Saturday was a big day in bowling for the Salem Wildcats. The team finished first in the Collinsville high school boys sectional at Camelot Bowl. The team spent the first part of the day in the top four but used the last two games of the day to secure a trip to the state finals.
Colton Shoemaker led the way for the Wildcats and finished fourth place individually in the sectional with games of 226, 190, 235, 214, 257 and 276 to average 233. Nick Gregg finished sixth individually with games of 198, 226, 235, 277, 212 and 240 to average 231. Kannon King bowled a 242, 160, 227, 247, 210 and 211 to average 216 for the Wildcats.
Charlie Hunter bowled a 233, 196, 216, 176, 191 and 203 to average 203. Dominick Winkler bowled a 216 and 223. Rhett Detering and Silas Moats helped finish Winkler’s middle two games and Rhett Detering had a 257 and 256 to round out the final two games for the Wildcats. Ryan Detering was also on the Wildcats sectional roster.
Colton Martin from Breese Central advanced to state as an individual with games of 179, 229, 242, 200, 265 and 195 to average 218. Ryan Voss from Mater Dei is on the alternate list for state individuals and had games of 190, 235, 232, 203, 180 and 195 to average 206 for the sectional.
Others that competed individually in the Collinsville sectional from the area but did not qualify for state included Blake Horstmann from Breese Central who bowled a 226, 153, 210, 223, 156 and 227 to average 199. Raymond Andrews from Webber Township bowled a 235, 190, 222, 200, 149 and 172 to average 195. Rhett Runge from Christ Our Rock had a 188, 206, 176, 199, 158 and 171 to average 183 for the day. Heath Ellis from Woodlawn bowled a 171, 171, 192, 170, 201 and 163 to average 178 and Blade Schriefer from Centralia bowled a 196, 109, 212, 171, 195 and 109 to average 165 for the day.
The Mount Vernon Rams competed in the Collinsville sectional as a team but did not qualify for state. Hunter Schoenrock led the Rams with games of 254, 155, 235, 200, 168 and 159 to average 195. Other bowlers for Mount Vernon included Trace Elliott, Travis Elliott, Matthew Williams, Zryan Williams, Brody Elliott, Gavin Sells and Jeremiah Barker.
High school boys state finals are scheduled for Friday and Saturday at St. Clair Bowl in Fairview Heights. The top 12 of 24 teams will make the cut to advance from Friday to Saturday.
High school girls regionals are set for Saturday, Feb. 4. The local regional will be at Nu Bowl Lanes in Mount Vernon. Anna-Jonesboro, Webber, Trico, Carbondale, Carterville, Christ Our Rock, Centralia, Harrisburg, Herrin, Marion, Massac County, Mount Vernon, Salem, Steeleville and Woodlawn. North Clay will have individuals bowling in the regional. The Alton, Columbia and Mount Vernon regionals are a part of the Belleville East sectional at Bel-Air Bowl in Belleville.

Thursday night trio league on Jan. 12 was led by Keith Stewart with a 241, Doug Meyer had a 236 and Kyle Pruden a 226. Top three-game series included Pruden with a 633 (211 average), Stephen Jacobs had a 590 (197 average) and Stewart a 578 (193 average). High games for the women were bowled by Nina Scattergood with a 173, Candy Cunningham with a 169 and Amy McCown with a 167. Top series included Cunningham with a 465 (155 average), McCown with a 440 (147 average) and Andrea Cushman with a 434 (145 average).
Friday night TGIF league on Jan. 13 was led by Jim Meritt with a 225, Harry Battle had a 224 and Dylan Sigrist a 215. Top three-game series included Sigrist with a 637 (212 average), Battle with a 623 (208 average) and Kyle Pruden with a 575 (192 average). Sarah Hodge bowled a 167 and had a 465 three-game series (155 average).
